Painting on Location

Jim McVicker

September 29–October 2

4 -Days | class meets 9 - 4 daily
Oils - Experienced Beginner to Intermediate

Jim McVicker was our Keynote Speaker for the 10th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival. He also won the best of show at that year's Laguna Plein Air Festival and he won the grand prize at the National Plein Air Convention.

This workshop with will enhance your abilities and inspire your senses allowing you to create better and perhaps larger paintings on-site. Jim McVicker has been painting in the outdoors and from life in large and small format since the mid 70's. On the first morning of this workshop Jim will demonstrate his process for starting a landscape. How to work the entire canvas in order to develop the painting as a unified whole, working on land, trees, water and sky so that the painting grows with a cohesive feeling and not as separate parts, covering the entire canvas within the first half hour.

Students will learn to see the landscape in terms of basic shapes and their relationship to each other through values and color. Special emphasis will be on simplifying the design and values to give your work a sense of completeness throughout the process. Jim will also talk about his technique of working on landscape paintings over a period of sittings in order to complete larger works in the field.

Students will use the second half of the workshop to do paintings that will be worked on at the same location for two or more sittings allowing each artist that is so inclined to paint larger in both the morning and afternoon light.

Jim will work with each artist one-on-one while being available and open to any questions - helping and or demonstrating how he would try to solve any challenges each student might be having.

Payment Options: Students may pay in full or choose the payment-plan option during registration. The payment plan requires a non-refundable $125 deposit with the balance due 30 days before the first day of the workshop.

About Jim McVicker
At now the midpoint of his career Jim McVicker is known for the convincing sense of atmosphere, light and color in his work. His landscapes and still lifes are both painted from life but feel like entirely different bodies of work sharing though the mysterious sense of 'air' in the space between things. McVicker is also known for his self portraits but the largest body of work is the landscapes all painted from life on both large and small formats. McVicker was a presenter at the 2013 Plein Air Convention and has won many awards for his work including First Place awards in Artist's Magazine annual competition in both the portrait and the still life categories.
