Art Programs for Youth exclusively at the Sedona Arts Center [Arizona]

Programming for youth has been an important part of the Arts Center’s mission. Through outreach programs into area schools, after-school arts and summer camps, the Arts Center has an evolving program for young artists. As technology has evolved, the programming has moved with it. What was once a theatre camp in the summer evolved into a tradition of combining artwork and filmmaking in an afternoon camp, and has now become a residential camp available to youth from around the country. Hosted at the beautiful Mago Garden Retreat Center, our Summer Camp is now a full immersion into creative potential and the natural beauty of the southwest.

Southwest Immersion - Filmmaking Camp for Ages 13 - 16

Filmmaker Susan Green and Mago Garden
offer a Unique Camp for Youth
2 weeks Sat - Sat July 25 - Aug 8 2009 Mago Garden Retreat Center

As taught by Susan Green, filmmaking is a collaborative, group activity, a process that brings people from different backgrounds, even different cultures, together in a fun, deeply artistic pursuit. The two-week residential filmmaking camp involves script-writing, acting, camera work, directing, and editing the collection of all the ‘assets’ needed to create a film. This process encourages a ‘full sensory awareness’ for the students while they learn how the rhythm of sound, images and color themes operate together to create the mood of the story - the secret ‘behind the scenes’ work of filmmaking. A second film ‘the making of…’ will document the overall camp experience. Each student will get a DVD of the finished films that they created. Susan Green holds an MFA in film. Her most recent film “Dance of the Warrior Mouse” was featured in the Sedona International Film Festival.

Mago Garden Retreat Center, located in the high desert near Sedona, will host the Sedona Arts Center’s Southwest Immersion. A unique feature of this program is that part of each day involves a mind/body growth program to improve the students mental focusing, self-esteem and physical well-being. The Korean based Dahn MuDo course uses slow non-contact martial arts movements to help the students enhance the natural balance and rhythm of their body and mind. The Power Drumming Course builds team spirit and coordination.
