Pastels are a rich
nearly pure pigment which creates miniature prisms
on the surface that shimmer and glow. To build
exciting as well as subtle colors, students will
explore various processes of layering using
different papers and discovering the magic of
simple, bold, often surprising watercolor
underpainting. We will expand and discover our own
authentic style of mark-making and experiment with
taking something unexpected, unusual or perhaps
ordinary and making it sing. Artists will use
reference materials for part of the class as a
‘jumping off point’ for creative interpretation,
always with the goal of transcending the camera’s
lense.
